Embarassing!

Today when I went to pick up Hunter from school all of the kids were talking about the Book Fair that was going on at the school. They were all excitedly looking through the brochure and picking out books that they wanted to buy when one little boy said, "Well I won't be coming to the Book Fair because my family doesn't have any money." Hunter quickly responded with, "Why? Doesn't your dad work hard enough?"

ummmm....that would have been a tough one to hear no matter what your son said.

so sad, first of all- that rich or poor, the kid would have heard someone say something like that to him in his home. you can't just assume that it is a poor family, because a lot of times they aren't saying stuff like that to their kids.

it's those of us with plenty of money for a book, but in passing make stupid (i know you don't like that word) comments like that not thinking that our kids will repeat it.

i think hunter's response says more about what you DO say to your kids about hard work. it's refreshing to know that he understands that money comes from something other than a plastic card, and he knows that someone works hard to get your money.

order an extra book and teach hunter a really great lesson about giving.

Hang on, I have to pick my jaw up off of the floor.......
Oh my. Poor kid. How much is a book and I will send some money along for him. Poor Hunter, he was just being honest!

oh that's sad...I know there have been times when we just literally didn't have any cash to buy a book from their monthly book orders...but that is sad to hear it coming from the child...there are creative ways to tell your kid that he can't order a book! aaah but I like Heidi Jo's comment...you've taught Hunter that Daddy works hard for his family (respect for Daddy's sacrifice)... that is such an important thing for kids to understand and like she said not just think that money comes from a piece of plastic!

At least he knows that his dad works really hard and knows why he has to.
